M25 Junctions 16 to 23 Widening
Located in the north-western quadrant of the M25 between the M40 and the A1(M) junctions, this 22.5 mile scheme involved widening the motorway from three lanes to four lanes in both directions in order to:
Scheme benefits will include:
The works also included widening to both sides of Berry Lane Viaduct, in addition to the replacement of the existing Park Avenue Footbridge just south of junction 18 at Chorleywood.
Construction began in April 2009 and was completed ahead of programme in June 2012. This schedule was deliberately timed to coincide with the London Olympics in July 2012, so keeping to programme was critical.
To minimise disruption to the travelling public three lanes were kept open in each direction during peak times, with essential lane closures only implemented at times of reduced traffic flow. The fast paced programme required both day and night working; at peak the team was working 24 hours a day/ 7 days a week.
