About the Role

The Structure Inspector will undertake civil, structural, and bridge condition inspections in line with inspection schedules and CPS policies, procedures, and guidance. These inspections will include General and Principal inspections.

The post holder plays a key role in supporting the delivery of the Structures Inspections Programme. Working closely with the Inspections Lead and a team of Inspectors, the post holder ensures inspections are properly permitted, coordinated, and executed to the required standards. This role is essential for maintaining the quality and timeliness of inspection activities across the network and meeting CPS contractual requirements.

 

What You’ll Be Doing

Main Duties and Accountabilities

  • Inspect and identify defects in structures of various forms and materials, in compliance with CS 450: Inspection of Highway Structures.
  • Ensure all necessary briefings, health and safety documentation, and other provisions are in place prior to inspection activities.
  • Monitor and update the inspection programme to reflect progress and changes.
  • Liaise with the Logistics Manager and Senior Inspector to book road space and traffic management to facilitate inspections when required.
  • Maintain attention to detail, ensuring inspection defect reporting meets quality and regulatory standards.
  • Escalate, as appropriate, defects affecting safety, structural integrity, or public decency for further inspection or action so that urgent intervention can be undertaken.
  • Carry out site supervision when required, ensuring work on site is completed in accordance with the brief.
  • Keep accurate logs and records of all structure inspections.

Operational Delivery

  • Deliver constructive feedback to improve inspection quality and adherence to standards.
  • Promote a culture of continuous improvement and professional development.
  • Track supplier progress and ensure timely execution of inspection tasks.
  • Conduct on-site inspections when required, ensuring compliance with current standards.

Stakeholder Engagement

  • Collaborate with internal teams across Asset and Project Delivery and Service Delivery.
  • Maintain effective working relationships with external partners and stakeholders.
  • Assist with configuring new systems used for collecting inspection data.
  • Report monthly inspection KPIs.

 

Who We’re Looking For

  • A minimum of three years’ experience in highway inspection, construction, or a related civil engineering field at Inspector level.
  • Certification (or working towards) under the Bridge Inspector Certification Scheme as an Inspector.
  • Understanding of defects in concrete, steel, masonry, and other materials, including causes and implications.
  • Knowledge of testing techniques and when/how to apply them.
  • Knowledge of principal repair techniques for common structure types and materials.
  • Strong judgement, attention to detail, ability to work to deadlines, communicate findings, and ensure compliance with legal and contractual requirements.
  • A positive attitude and advanced understanding of health and safety legislation, risk management, and safe working practices.
  • Full UK driving licence with a maximum of three penalty points.
  • Proficiency with structure inspection tools and IT systems.
  • Digital skills in Agile Assets, Confirm, and Microsoft packages.
  • Experience in inspection programmes or infrastructure delivery.
  • Ability to manage and motivate teams.
  • Knowledge of traffic management and road space permitting.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement abilities.
  • Familiarity with inspection standards and quality assurance processes.
  • A current CSCS card at the appropriate level to enable site inspections to be undertaken.
