About the Role

Balfour Beatty currently has an opportunity for an Incident Support Unit (ISU) Operative Level 1 to work on the M25 – one of the busiest and most important sections of road in the UK.

As part of the Connect Plus Services business based in Leatherhead, you will be responsible for assisting in the efficient service delivery of the M25 DBFO Network by undertaking a wide range of incident response, hazard clearance, network maintenance, and other tasks as required.

 

Working Arrangements (ISU Operative – Shift Work and Travel)

  • Expected to work on a 4-on, 4-off shift pattern, rotating equally between four day shifts and four night shifts.
  • Shift start times vary according to the scheduled roster:
    • Day shifts: 06:00 to 18:00 or 07:00 to 19:00.
    • Night shifts: 18:00 to 06:00 or 19:00 to 07:00.
    • Each shift includes two 30-minute breaks.
  • Reasonable level of travel around the M25 network and between depots.
  • Travel to meetings, training, and work sites outside the normal operational area.
  • Expected to participate in out-of-hours call-out rotas (e.g., Winter Maintenance).

 

What You’ll Be Doing

  • Provide the initial response and arrange specialist advice at the scene of road-related incidents, hazards, and collisions, acting in a bronze incident command capacity and working safely in accordance with agreed CPS policies, method statements, and risk assessments to facilitate prompt hazard/incident clearance.
  • Undertake activities, as instructed, to ensure that your area of responsibility is maintained. This will include, but is not limited to:
    • Cyclical maintenance.
    • Carriageway repairs.
    • Soft estate maintenance (e.g., grass cutting).
    • Street cleansing and litter picking.
    • Sign maintenance.
    • Safety fence repairs.
    • Boundary fence repairs.
    • Minor civil engineering or building tasks (e.g., headwall repair).
    • Any other duties allocated by Line Managers.
  • Implement traffic management in line with CPS policies, method statements, risk assessments, and industry standards.
  • Provide accurate and legible written and verbal communication in the form of reports and records as required.
  • Use mobile communication/data devices to accurately input data for record purposes to form reports and business records.
  • Undertake routine vehicle checks and maintain accurate and up-to-date driving records in accordance with CPS procedures and legislation.
  • Take due care of CPS property, including tablets, vehicles, and radios.
  • Raise awareness of issues which may affect the safe operation of the network and report these as observed.
  • Check that traffic management signs, equipment, and materials are carried on vehicles in line with the current maintenance checklist and are in working order; restock and report defects as appropriate.
  • Participate in the Winter Service rota as required.
  • Attend training courses as required and maintain competencies.

Who We’re Looking For

Qualifications (Essential)

  • UK Driving Licence, minimum Category C (LGV Class 2).
  • CSCS Operative Card.

Qualifications (Desirable)

  • UK Driving Licence, minimum Category CE (LGV Class 1).
  • Driver Qualification Card.
  • 12AB for Static Temporary Traffic Management on High-Speed Roads and All Purpose Trunk Road (APTR) network.
  • FISS card.
  • Level 2 NVQ Certificate in Highways Maintenance.
  • Traffic Management Foreman (TMF) qualification / Lead Traffic Management Operative (LTMO).

Essential Criteria

  • Successfully pass the security check as part of the recruitment process.
  • Successfully pass the annual driving licence check.
  • Successfully pass pre-employment drug and alcohol test and further tests upon request.
  • Successfully pass the company’s health screening programme.
