About the Role

Join our esteemed Connect Plus Services Technology Team and take on a leadership role in maintaining and enhancing the M25’s critical technological infrastructure. As Lead Engineer, you will manage a team of up to four engineers and technicians, ensuring effective task allocation, performance management, and operational excellence.

In addition to your leadership responsibilities, you will play a hands-on role in the field, attending jobs where necessary and providing expert guidance to your team. The team is responsible for the cyclic maintenance and fault rectification of key roadside technology, including:

  • CCTV
  • Emergency Roadside Telephones (ERT)
  • MIDAS
  • RCC
  • NTIS
  • HAWIS
  • Traffic Signals
  • Message Signs

You will ensure all maintenance and repair activities are carried out in line with National Highways and Technology Services quality plans, meeting contractual requirements and timescales.

What You’ll Be Doing

Leadership & Operational Management

  • Adhere to the ‘Zero Harm’ safety process at all times, reporting any health and safety concerns promptly.
  • Provide a customer-focused, service-oriented, and commercially aware approach to all work.
  • Supervise and manage a team of up to four engineers and technicians, ensuring efficient task allocation and high performance.
  • Oversee team responsibilities including timesheets, annual leave, sickness, and absence management.
  • Support field teams by attending jobs when necessary and ensuring work meets contractual KPIs and quality standards.

Technical Responsibilities

  • Carry out cyclic maintenance and fault rectification on roadside technology systems.
  • Develop and implement fault reduction strategies across sectors.
  • Ensure NH ServiceNow data is accurately captured and recorded.
  • Attend faults and knockdowns, carrying out corrective maintenance and site/equipment reinstatement.
  • Routinely liaise with NH, RCC, and TOC.
  • Attend meetings as required.
  • Maintain proficiency in the operation and maintenance of all National Highways systems (hardware and software) within each Control Office.
  • Manage regional engineers’ NHSS 8 sector scheme portfolios, ensuring CPS compliance.
  • Respond to emergencies in line with procedures and provide technical liaison for third-party faults.
  • Ensure all equipment is logged, stored securely, and maintained at all times.

Who We’re Looking For

We’re seeking a skilled and motivated individual with the following qualifications and experience:

  • HNC or BTEC Higher National Certificate in Electronics/Telecommunications Engineering (or equivalent).
  • NHSS8 Certified.
  • Experience working on motorway communications or closely related systems.
  • Strong knowledge of NH communications infrastructure and standards.
  • Familiarity with NH testing and ADAMr requirements.
  • Broad technology experience across systems such as MIDAS, CCTV, VMS, ERTs, NTIS, HAWIS, and Traffic Signals.
  • Good communication skills and the ability to manage a team effectively.
  • Experience working with the NRTS Contractor.
  • Flexibility to work across different areas of the network and adapt to varying working approaches.
