Breaking Barriers: Championing Women and Equality Across The Industry

Connect Plus and CPS recently hosted a Breaking Barriers conference event, which was dedicated to improving inclusion, safety and accessibility for women working in the industry.

The session brought colleagues together from across the network to share progress, hear personal experiences, explore the practical steps needed to create a more inclusive working environment and strengthen everyday behaviours that promote genuine equality. The event also reinforced our commitment to driving industry leading change, helping to create a more welcoming and equal industry and encouraging more young women to consider careers in the industry.

A key feature of the event was a demonstration from Pulsar/Arco, who showcased their newly developed PPE range designed specifically in response to feedback from female operatives. The updated workwear, including lightweight, stretch, Class 2 trousers, represents a significant improvement in comfort, fit and safety. This development marks an important step forward for the industry, demonstrating how listening to women’s experiences can directly shape safer, more effective protective clothing for everyone on site.

Guest speaker Monty Jowett, Lecturer in Highways at Derwentside College, delivered an inspiring presentation reflecting on her experiences, achievements and career journey in the industry, reinforcing the importance of representation and opportunity for women in traditionally maledominated industries.

Speakers from across Connect Plus, CPS, National Highways and the wider Framework also shared their career journeys and reflections on the barriers women continue to face in the industry. Their contributions highlighted the importance of appropriate welfare facilities, the positive impact of flexible working on retention and progression, the role of managers and allies in creating inclusive environments, and the need for clear development pathways supported by visible organisational commitment. These insights not only demonstrated where progress has been made but also highlighted the wider industry need for consistent, practical action to ensure women can build longterm, fulfilling careers in construction and highways.

Guests also took part in group discussions exploring practical improvements to site facilities, working practices and communication. The session encouraged colleagues to consider how allyship can be demonstrated consistently and effectively in daytoday operations, reinforcing the message that inclusion is a shared responsibility across the network and a vital part of raising standards across the industry.

We extend sincere thanks to all presenters for their openness and leadership, to Pulsar/Arco for an informative PPE demonstration, and to every colleague who contributed to the discussions. The feedback gathered will play a central role in shaping the next phase of the Breaking Barriers programme, ensuring the organisation continues to champion an environment where women feel supported, valued and able to succeed.

This work forms part of a broader commitment to leading positive change across the industry and helping set new expectations for how women are supported.
